Cold weather shelter opens in Hancock County

Those needing a place to keep warm can go to the cold weather shelter now opened at the Lutheran Church of The Pines on Highway 90 in Waveland.

The churches fellowship hall has been transformed into a cold weather shelter.

The American Red Cross has teamed up with the church along with the Old Spanish Trial Baptist Church to open the shelter.

It will be open from 4:30 p.m. until 8 a.m.

Salvation army offers relief from heat

Many people throughout South Mississippi are coping with the effects of the Summer heat. Some worse than others.

The Salvation Army Mississippi Gulf Coast Area Command is trying to help keep residents cool. As part of its continued effort to keep residents cool and prevent heat related deaths they started their Fan-tastic program about a month ago.

The non-profit is still offering fans to qualified residents of Harrison, Hancock, Pearl River, Stone, George and Jackson Counties.

Emily is no more, now onto a heat wave

WLOX Meteorolgist Mike Reader said tropical storm Emiy is no more. The poorly organized tropical storm formed Monday, August 1 in the Carribbean.

"The storm broke up over the high terrain of Hispinola. With no circulation the system is now a tropical wave. There is no mention of regeneration, but the wave will be moving into the Bahamas this weekend and bears watching," Reader said.

MS Insurance Commissioner to lobby Congress

(WLOX) - After dealing with record flooding, the state insurance commissioner Mike Chaney said Mississippians shouldn't have to worry if Congress will let the National Flood Insurance Program expire.

Chaney is joining commissioners from across the country asking that N.F.I.P. be extended for five years. Right now the program is set to end right in the middle of hurricane season.
