Movies, book bingo, author, graphic novels featured at 3rd week of library’s Summer program

Hancock County Public Library System:

Illustrator Chuck Galey, book bingo, and movies highlight the third week of the Hancock County Library System’s 2012 Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is Dream Big Read and the purpose of the annual program is to encourage children to read while school is out.

The program is open to children 6-11 years of age.

Stennissphere museum closed October 8

Stennis Space Center, BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. – StenniSphere, the visitor center at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center, will be closed to the general public Oct. 8 for an onsite event.

The visitor center will reopen Oct. 12 and resume normal operating hours.

StenniSphere is open to the public 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and is closed on major holidays. Public tours run throughout each day from the Launch Pad at the Hancock County Welcome Center, Interstate 10, Exit 2. The last tour leaves the Launch Pad at 2 p.m. each day.

Pearlington Library announces new hours

The Pearlington Public Library hours of operation have changed. The new hours are closed on Mondays; 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 11a.m. – 5 p.m. on Wednesdays; 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Friday; and 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

The Pearlington Public Library is a full-service library with a children’s area, a computer lab and a meeting room for organizations and special events.
It is located at 6096 First Avenue in Pearlington.

Application deadline approaching to apply for $50,000 in literacy grants to MS nonprofits

Verizon Wireless, MISSISSIPPI – The September 1 deadline is quickly approaching for Mississippi nonprofits to apply for a total of $50,000 in grants to support literacy programs from the Verizon Foundation.

Grants will support projects that:
• Enhance GED and/or adult literacy programs.
• Support pre-k and/or k-12 literacy programs.
• Use resources from the Thinkfinity Literacy Network for programs for families and adult learners.
• Improve literacy skills for a particular group or individuals.
• Target under-resourced communities.

MS Blues trail marker unveiling June 17

Mississippi's West Coast Hancock County Tourism Bureau - The unveiling of Hancock County's first Mississippi Blues Trail Marker is Friday, June 17. The unveiling of the historical marker will take place on site of the 100 Men Hall, 303 Union Street, Bay St. Louis.

A brief presentation ceremony will take place with dignitaries from Mississippi, The Mississippi Blues Trail Commission, the City of Bay St. Louis, and the 100 Men D.B.A. Hall Board of Directors.
