USM Gulf Coast is partnering with Hope Haven Children's Services and Waveland United Methodist Church to put together Meals with Mates.

Meals with Mates is a free community presentation to share meal planning techniques, food budgeting tricks, shopping strategies and cooking ideas.

The event will take place on Wednesday, April 18 at the Leo Seal Jr.

4th Annual Walk for Autism Awareness kicks of April 28

The 4th Annual Walk for Autism Awareness kicks off April 28, 2012 at Camp Wilkes.

Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. and will start at 10 a.m.

Walking Trails

Activities

Fishing for kids

The event is sponsored by TEAAM AND TEAAM Gulf Coast, Gulf Coast Rehabilitation and Camp Wilkes Inc.

All proceeds will go towards Kamp Kaleidoscope, a Summer camp for children and teens with an autism spectrum disorder.

Help abused or neglected children by volunteering with CASA

Think child abuse doesn't happen in South Mississippi? Think again. Thousands of children are abused, neglected or endangered across the area. CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, is made up of volunteers who help make life better for children.

Through CASA, these children get a voice in court.  However, the organization needs more volunteers.

In Jackson County, CASA helps more than 1,600 children. 

To continue the work, the group conducts volunteer drives twice a year.

Silver Slipper Casino Employees Give More than Time

Hancock County – February 2, 2012 – When a fellow employee was diagnosed with cancer in 2010, Silver Slipper Casino employees Angie Kothmann, Kendra McArthur and Danielle Strong became involved in The Pink Heart Funds Ministry and Outreach. Pink Hearts, a Mississippi Gulf Coast non-profit organization, provides free wigs for cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy and to those suffering from alopecia or any other debilitating cause for hair loss. 

The organization also provides breast prostheses to those who have had lumpectomies or mastectomies.

Education committee launches 2012 bookworms programs

The Hancock Chamber Education Committee launched its 2012 Bookworms Program with a short training session on reading to young students.

There will be 46 volunteers reading in all 1st and 3rd grade classes. The theme of this year’s books will be "Science".

The Kohl’s Department Stores (NYSE: KSS) Kohl’s Cares® Scholarship Program will award more than $420,000 in scholarships and prizes, ranging from $50 Kohl’s gift cards to $10,000 scholarships, to more than 2,200 young volunteers who have made a positive impact on their communities. Nominations for kids ages six to 18 will be accepted February 1 – March 15 at kohlskids.com.
